Competition Photography: The Secret of Strong Images and Properties That Matter

In this in-depth session, Gordon breaks down what really makes a photo work — especially in competition settings. He leads us through a series of systematic analysis of the key visual aspects, the characteristics and their properties found consistently in award-winning images. “There is a secret to making strong images for competition … The secret is hidden in plain sight, and once you know what it is, it’s easy to see it in strong images.” said Battaile.

Gordon is a 35-year veteran of the Forest Grove Camera Club in Oregon, and has served as board member for 27 years on the Columbia Council of Camera Clubs (4Cs), six of which as Chair. He had won 8 4Cs Image of the Year awards between 1994 and 2024. Gordon has a long history and strong interest in judging. He judged in three of the last four North Shore Photographic Challenges.

This is a must-attend event for anyone serious about developing a sharper photographic eye and mind and more impactful image-making. This presentation offers universally valuable insights that serve as an aid to create strong, compelling, and effective photographs.
