The Delta Photo Club invites members and guests to a special Zoom presentation with Hawaii Island-based photographer and videographer Ken Goodrich on “Video Creation of Hawaii’s Kilauea Volcano.”

Ken has spent over five decades exploring photography and light, evolving from documentary to fine art and experimental approaches. He’s exhibited in Hawaii and has published internationally.

In this presentation Ken will share insights into creating finished video projects from still photographs and video footage including ways to sequence images, combine different types of footage and using music to create a cohesive visual experience. Safety, situational awareness, camera gear, filters, lens choices, shutter speed, creative effects, exposure techniques, protecting equipment and photographing lava entering the ocean will be covered. He’ll also discuss techniques for photographing exotic botanicals in lowland rainforests and seascapes, capturing the everchanging moods of the ocean. Throughout the presentation, he’ll explain the reasoning behind each photograph, explaining his choices of location, lens, exposure, and shutter speed, and how changing conditions influenced the final image. This approach gives participants practical techniques they can apply to their own photography while also providing an inside look at the creative process behind photographing an active volcano.

“For this piece, I started with the choral music O Magnum Mysterium and then searched for images that would complement the movement and mood of the music I wished to convey the meditative feeling I experience as nature unfolds its destructive and creative phases in and around the Kilauea Volcano,” Ken Goodrich explained. “The music really guides the selection of each video clip and still image.”
