DPC Photo Night is Wednesday, October 12, 2022

Though our weather remains warm, September will soon be behind us as we move further into Fall. Time seems to fly. Which is a good place to be for a first theme this month — Flying. Many things fly besides birds, so we challenge you to seek out all things that fly. Yes you can include birds, but what about balls, bubbles, planes, fish and more?

Intentional Camera Movement, known as ICM is when you move your camera during the exposure of an image, for a creative or artistic effect. To quote Todd Vorenkamp in his Introduction to Intentional Camera Movement Photography, it is “a fascinating and beautiful world where the camera and the photographer’s movements combine to become a mechanical paintbrush—transforming photographic capture into something completely unique and otherwise invisible to the naked eye. In a photographic world generally obsessed with image sharpness, there are photographic artists among us who give little thought to everything we’ve ever been taught about photography to create spectacular images by intentionally moving their cameras during capture.”

Our September workshop/outing to Deas Island Park had a challenge of taking pictures with Intentional Camera Movement (ICM). Here is your opportunity to submit photos that you took then or at another time when your artistic and creative juices were stirred through ICM.

The image below was taken during a summer outing to Boundary Bay. It is of photo club members practising taking photos with intentional camera movement.

The third theme this month can be an image we all can appreciate but it may also be a matter of personal taste. When I think of places with a good view, I think of vast vistas of hills, mountains or unusual terrain. For others, views may be of things, places, or events. Sometimes these views can evoke personal memories or emotions. This month we’re asking that you send us your vision of Someplace with a Good View (SGV).

Our next theme comes from the BBC theme of The Visitor (Visitor). Make of that what you will and let’s have some fun showing others what types of visitors you’ve captured in camera.

Last but not least is our Open category where you can submit any image you’d like to discuss or get feedback on.

Categories are: Flying, Intentional Camera Movement (ICM), Someplace with a Good View (SGV), The Visitor (Visitor), and Open.

Note: Each member can submit up to 2 images for each of the 5 themes of Flying, ICM, SGV, Visitor, and Open. Members can also send short slideshows or videos
