DPC Digital Night is Wednesday, December 11, 2019

This is our last Digital Night of 2019! Let’s make it a memorable one and break a few records by having everyone submit an image and attend the meeting.

I’m hoping 2 of this month’s themes will challenge you to look through your pictures and find those special images that you might have passed over. The first two themes this month are: Odd Couples and Nostalgia. As we have seen many birds in the previous months’ categories I thought we might exclude this theme but just in case you had your heart set on submitting your bird images, that will be our third theme. Lastly we will include an Open theme for that unique image that doesn’t fit in any of the other categories.

The “Odd Couples” theme for this month was suggested by a member and I leave it to your imagination to come up with what that could look like. The second theme of Nostalgia is defined on Dictionary.com as “a sentimental longing or wistful affection for the past”, so look for images of old architecture (barns, buildings), cars, memories, and anything old that may tug at our heart strings. As we have a wide variety and abundance of birds in our area this time of year, many of you will have images for the Bird category.

Last month’s brief tutorial on Photoshop showed how to replace a sky and use the gradient tool to enhance skies and foregrounds. We also talked about using the gradient tool to change the tone/colour/feel of an image. This month’s challenge category will be to show a before and after image where you replaced the sky or enhanced an image using the ‘select and mask’ tool or the gradient tool. Note: As this is a challenge category for learning and using Photoshop, try using Photoshop to edit your image.

If time permits, December’s Photoshop tutorial will include removing objects in Photoshop, five different ways. I’ll talk about when to use which tool as there are many different ways  to remove or move objects in Photoshop. This tutorial will then inspire next month’s challenge theme where you can submit a before and after image that shows objects removed or moved.

So, let’s break some records and overwhelm me with lots of images this month.

Categories are: Odd Couples; Nostalgia; Birds; Other and the Photoshop challenge: Skies

Note: Each member can submit up to 3 images for each of the five categories.

Members can also send short slideshows or videos.  We will show all the categories, and end with videos, as time permits.

Remember, for the best display quality, images should be resized to a maximum width of 1920 pixels and a maximum height of 1080 pixels. This may not be possible with cell/tablet images so please send us the largest image possible, up to the limits indicated above.

It is important to name your files as shown below so that they can be sorted and everyone’s image can be shown. Please note: there is a change in naming between the regular and challenge categories.
