Making consistent, interesting and insightful black and white photographs require skills very different from colour imaging. Like any skill, some knowledge and lots of practice are required. This interactive talk introduces you to the special properties of black and white photography and gives you starting points for truly learning to see in black and white.
Russ and Wendy have pursued a full-time life in the arts since 2002. They have exhibited their photographs in commercial and museum venues in Canada and the United States, lectured at the college and university level, and been featured in international photography magazines and academic journals. Their book, Chasing Light Stranger is catalogued in the National Gallery of Canada’s Canadian Photography Institute. They currently lead the black and white darkroom program at Langara College, offer classes on various topics in creative photography to photography clubs and groups, and provide one on one consultation to photographers who desire a personal approach to evolve their work. Their exhibition work is created exclusively in the darkroom with black and white materials. Their interests over the past few years has turned towards unconventional uses of traditional materials, camera-less photographs, and images that challenge mainstream definitions of photography.
