Virtual Digital Night

Well, virtual digital nights via Zoom have proved to be successful. We’ve been able to show submitted images and get feedback and questions from club members who attend the online meeting. So, we’re doing it again this month. Why don’t you join us? Check your mailbox for our Mailchimp that contains the link and password. Email us if you missed or have deleted it.

This month we have five categories that we hope will stimulate your photographic senses. The photographic categories are: Lightbox challenge-Photographing Shadows; Colour focused photography; Cellphone photography, Banners for our website and an Open category.

The photographic focus provided by the Lightbox Photography cards Karoline Cullen has kindly shared with us is all about photographing shadows. As shown on the card the shape of shadows can be very appealing and make your composition interesting. Either create them indoors with a flash or outdoors with sunlight or a man-made light source. Looking for shadows is an important skill for photographers to not only be aware of them, but to use them as a creative source in your photography.

The second theme this month is photographing colour. Colour can create a response in the viewer and often aid in the portrayal of a mood. You can use colour to welcome your viewer or to move your viewer’s eye around your composition. I particularly love colour so I’m looking forward to seeing everyone’s submissions.

Another one of our themes is in response to the cell phone photography presentation I gave a few weeks ago, where I spoke of the power of mobile phone cameras and the many apps you can download and use to create awesome images. So the challenge is to take and edit your images on your mobile phone. If it’s more convenient to edit them on your computer that’s okay too, but let’s ensure the photos are taken with your cell phone.

Our fourth theme is a call out to members to submit banner images that can be placed on our website. We need to showcase what fantastic photographs we generate in our club. Please note that banner images must be sized correctly to be placed on our website, and therefore must be 1920 pixels wide by 650 pixels high.

The last category is Open, to allow members to share images that may not fit into other categories.

Categories are: Shadows; Colour; Mobile; Banner; and Open.

Note: Each member can submit up to 3 images for each of the 5 regular categories.

Members can also send short slideshows or videos.

Remember, for the best display quality, images should be resized to a maximum width of 1920 pixels and a maximum height of 1080 pixels. This may not be possible with cell/tablet images so please send us the largest image possible, up to the limits indicated above.

Note: Banner images must have a maximum width of 1920 pixels and a maximum height of 650 pixels.

It is important to name your files as shown below so that they can be sorted and everyone’s image can be shown.
